Death by Organ Donation - Legitimate But Unneeded

This NPR story covers the recently revived interest in death by organ donation. This would clearly violated the dead donor rule - in at least three ways. First, we are killing the patient to get their organs. Second, we are procuring vital non-paired organs before death determination,. Third, we are killing the patient by taking their organs.

One reaction might be that we already violate the dead donor rule every hour of every day, all year long. So, our actions speak volumes about how much we really care about the dead donor rule.

Another reaction is that this is  death by organ donation is unnecessary. In one-third of the United States, the patient can hasten their death form MAID. Organ procurement would proceed after death. This complies with the dead donor rule. We are not killing the patient to get their organs. The patient is killing themselves. We are procuring organs only after death determination. We are not killing the patient by taking their organs because they are already dead when we take their organs.
