POLST programs are working as intended according to a new study in JAMDA. They help assure value congruent care.
Results suggest continued implementation and long-term use of POLST programs streamlined advance directives among residents, helped lessen unnecessary hospitalizations and limited aggressive care at the end. The probability of dying in the nursing home or hospice increased steadily with programs that had reached endorsement and mature status over time, though significant additional improvements were seen after the five-year mark.
