As in other jurisdictions, the number of individuals using VSED has risen significantly in the Netherlands.
Previous studies by Boudewijn Chabot showed that 2.1% of Dutch deaths were from VSED. A new study by Fenne Bosma shows that is now 3.5%.
Between 2019 and 2023, an estimated 5,800 people died annually from VSED. Most people choose VSED after being unable to access euthanasia.
