Hospital Retracts Brain Death Determination

Jonathan Gaines was airlifted to Savannah, Georgia's Memorial Hospital to treat multiple gunshot wounds, including one to his head. Hospital staff told Gaines' family that he was brain dead.

But when Gaines was taken off the ventilator, he showed signs of brain activity. Staff decided to put him back on life support and continue tests.

Unfortunately, the list of erroneous death determinations is not only growing but also getting better documented. For example, the Paula Denison case has been examined by the Mississippi courts and Congress.
