As of December 1, 2025, Arthur Caplan stepped down from his role as Director of the Division of Medical Ethics after 13 years of exceptional leadership. Under his guidance, the Division established NYU Langone as a national leader in ethical considerations across medicine, public health, and policy.
It is difficult to capture the breadth of Dr. Caplan’s impact. Author of more than 35 books, nearly 900 peer-reviewed papers, and a frequent commentator in major media outlets, his scholarship and public engagement have shaped how ethics informs clinical care and health policy worldwide.
If you would like to preserve Art’s legacy and advance the future of medical ethics, please consider making a gift in his honor. All monies raised will ensure that the team Art has built can respond quickly to emerging ethical crises in healthcare, conduct groundbreaking research that shapes policy and practice, train new ethicists and clinicians to lead the field for decades, and offer expert guidance when doctors, hospitals, and institutions face impossible choices.
