MAID in Spain - First 4 Years Shows Growth but Challenges

Spain's euthanasia law cam into force four years ago, in late June 2021. Since then, 1,034 individuals have obtained euthanasia.

But hundreds more were locked out. Although eligible, they were unable to access euthanasia because of the review period lasts 49 days. Significant evidence shows that even much shorter periods materially impede access. So, Canada dropped its 10-day wait period. Most U.S. jurisdictions dropped their traditional 15-day wait periods. Spain must accelerate its process.

Last year, Spain has about the same number of MAID deaths as Oregon (~400). But Spain is 12 times as populous as Oregon.
