I published three articles defending VSED as a bridge to MAID. I am workshopping a fourth at this Harvard conference in a few weeks.
- Patients with Dementia Using VSED to Qualify for MAID, 2(1) JOURNAL OF AID IN DYING MEDICINE 76-86 (Dec. 2024) (with Lisa Brodoff). LINK(
- VSED Bridge to MAID: Spotlighting Better End-of-Life Options, 73(1) JOURNAL OF THE AMERICAN GERIATRICS SOCIETY 314-315 (Jan. 2025) (with Lisa Brodoff). LINK
- Medical Aid in Dying to Avoid Late-Stage Dementia, 72(4) JOURNAL OF THE AMERICAN GERIATRICS SOCIETY 1216-1222 (2024) (with Lisa Brodoff). LINK
And in March 2025, we discussed these on the Geri-Pal podcast.
The legality of this path has been widely conceded. But have patients been using it? In addition to the detailed case that we profiled in JAGS, additional cases have now been reported.
Most recently, a patient who with ALS decided they were unwilling to live to the end of the disease course. And they were unwilling to wait until a six month prognosis for MAID. So, this patient began VSED to get the six month prognosis clarified because her team didn't think her ALS was there yet. The attending clinician took a first request for MAID on the patient's first day of VSED. The patient still had capacity and made a second request several days later.
