Several U.S. cases have been documented in medical literature of a non-patient ingesting a patient's MAID/VAD medications. Now Australia has just had its second case.
Notably, this is not a risk unique to MAID/VAD. Prescription drug misuse is a common form of drug diversion. Every day, thousands of medications are taken by someone other than the intended recipient. MAID/VAD is not and cannot be 100% safe. It is subject to the same patient safety risks as everything else in healthcare.
