Tom Beauchamp was a foundational figure in bioethics. A Rockville, Maryland funeral home has posted this official obituary.
My own memories bring me back to my doctoral dissertation for which Tom was the primary mentor. As I was challenging arguments in The Principles of Biomedical Ethics, I had to read those volumes carefully many times.
I was apprehensive and rightly so. Tom was a tough reader and made me rewrite and rewrite to make the arguments stronger. Thankfully, I finally earned my Ph.D. in philosophy in 2003 (after starting both the J.D. and Ph.D. programs at Georgetown in 1992).
I had already moved to Beverly Hills, CA by 2000. So, it was there that the dissertation took its final shape. I fondly recall editing, revising, and polishing at UCLA with ample diligence because I knew my audience demanded it.
