Lawrence J. Schneiderman (1932 - 2018)

I just learned that Larry Schneiderman died this summer. He was one of the most prolific and influential writers on medical futility.

His articles and books on the issue have had a significant influence on me - from my first article on the topic in 2007, through last summer's special issue in Perspectives in Biology and Medicine where many key writers responded directly to Larry.

Moreover, I am fortunate to have been able to sit down at meals to discuss medical futility and clinical ethics with Larry on several occasions. The ASBH has a memorial page. A biographical website is here

  1. Thank you very much for posting this, Thad. Larry introduced me to Jo Banks and otherwise welcomed me into the medical humanities community. We co-taught a humanities elective at UCSD for many years--he even let me move it from "all Chekhov, all the time" to "Chekhov and others." Larry was a generous mentor and a dear friend whose loss is palpable. Thank you!
