MAID in France - Constitutional Council Approves

On July 15, 2026, the French National Assembly enacted a MAID law. On August 14, 2026 the Constitutuonal Council ruled the law constitutional, subject to three additions to the adopted text:

  1. Requirement to obtain the opinion of the person exercising guardianship over a protected adult
  2. Establishment of a conscience clause for pharmacists—namely, the right to refuse to dispense a prescription for lethal medication
  3. Implementation of a collective conscience clause for private institutions—which can therefore refuse to administer lethal injection if a patient requests it.
