Estate planning is the process of deciding how your property and personal affairs should be handled during your lifetime, if you become unable to manage them yourself, and after your death.
An increasing number of estate planning law firms are offering Dementia Directives alongside wills, trusts, and other traditional documents.
For example, this California law firm explains: "Traditional Advance Health Care Directive may not address every question that can arise when a person develops advanced Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia. Family Compass Law offers a Voluntary Dementia Directive designed to supplement a client’s Advance Health Care Directive and provide more detailed instructions for care in the event of advanced dementia."
The firm expands: "The Directive allows a client to state his or her wishes concerning assisted oral feeding and fluids if the client can no longer make informed health-care decisions or feed independently. It can address whether hand feeding should continue while the person appears receptive to and enjoys eating or drinking, and when assisted feeding should stop."
In addition to these custom directives, many organizations offer preprinted forms or apps to complete dementia VSED directives.
