For a decade, most of the tens of thousands of patients who received a prescription for medical aid in dying received a prescription for D-D-M-A-Ph. This is a compound of digoxin, digitalis, morphine, amitriptyline, and phenobarbital.
But emerging research presented at EOLO-COLO suggests that future prescriptions may replace morphine with hydromorphone. As compared to D-D-M-A-Ph, D-D-H-A-Ph reduces the time to sleep (from 5 minutes to 3 minutes on average). It also reduces the time to death.
