Futile CPR - Clinician Not Authorized to Determine Futility and Withhold CPR

Onondaga Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing, in Minoa New York, was recently placed on a list of the nation's worst nursing homes. Here is just one reason.

A resident was found around 5:30 a.m. unresponsive with no pulse by a licensed practical nurse. The resident had previously signed a medical order for life-sustaining treatment which explicitly stated: “Cardiopulmonary resuscitation be attempted when they had no pulse and/or were not breathing."

But the LPN made the decision to withhold CPR on the basis that it would be "futile." But the LPN was not allowed to make that determination without a higher-level provider.
