Hospital Withdraws Life-Sustaining Treatment without Court Permission

When UK hospitals want to withdraw life-sustaining treatment without patient or surrogate consent, they invariably go to court for permission. And they usually get it.

But St. Helier Hospital in South London plans to withdraw treatment from 68-year-old ICU patient Robert Barnor WITHOUT first seeking court permission.

The Hospital apparently grounded this approach on the basis that the decision was purely "clinical" rather than a "best interest" determination. Barnor has severe neurological damage and depends on dialysis.
