Australia's Northern Territory will soon be the last Australian jurisdiction to authorize MAID/VAD.
Unfortunately, it looks like NT will follow the other jurisdictions' requirement of a 6-12 month terminal illness. This is a prerequisite in all six states but not ACT. A former NT chief minister rightly voices concern about the inclusion of a time frame, noting it "has caused difficulties with people accessing the law."
But MAID/VAD laws, like all laws, must balance equity against enactability. We must sacrifice some fairness and justice in order to secure enough votes to pass a law that improves the status quo.
