DNR on Disabled Patients without Consent

ITV News has found that multiple UK hospitals put blanket 'Do Not Attempt Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation' (DNR) orders on at least 12 patients with learning disabilities after being ordered to stop the practice five years ago.

NHS guidelines require that before issuing a DNR medical officials must both (1) assess patients on an case-by-case basis and (2) consult either the person involved or their family members. But this is still not happening.

DNR on disabled patients without consent has been challenged in several high profile U.S. cases like Grace Schara (Wisconsin 2025) and Michael Hickson (Texas 2025).
