A new 60-page patient guide to VSED has been prepared by the KNMG medical federation with Alzheimer Nederland, ANBO-PCOB, NVVE, the Dutch Patients Federation and Seniors Brabant-Zeeland.
The guide covers practical specifics like what supplies to obtain. It includes a separate section addressed to relatives and their role. Most of the guide is comprised of patient stories illustrating the reasons and ways in which patients VSED. Unfortunately, the guide fails to meaningfully grapple with VSED in advanced dementia.
Last year, KNMG published guidelines for clinicians in both English and Dutch. The newer patient guide Stop Eating and Drinking to Die Earlier is based on the guidelines but offers more practical information about the preparation and the process.
