Émilie G. was convicted of murder for setting her 95-year-old grandfather on fire as he laid in his bed. But she is now being retried as she argues that she wanted to end the suffering of her grandfather.
Even if the grandfather consented, this would constitute felony assisted suicide in any U.S. jurisdiction - even those with MAID laws. Americans are regularly convicted of smothering, shooting, and other compassionate killings. Yet, the sentences are usually rather light, as was the case in Émilie G.'s first trial.
