VSED Bridge to MAID - Now Addressed in UK Too

While VSED bridge to MAID matters most in the United States, it may matter to other ultra-restrictive MAID jurisdictions. As the UK is set on this path, there has been significant discussion of how VSED might make patients terminally ill for purposes of the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill.

On Friday, MP Naz Shah introduced an amendment:

"A person who would not otherwise meet the requirements of subsection (1) shall not be considered to meet those requirements solely as a result of voluntarily stopping eating or drinking.”

MP Shah explained: "This amendment means that someone who is not terminally ill within the meaning of subsection (1) cannot bring themselves within that definition by voluntarily stopping eating or drinking or both."

Notably, the introduction of this amendment implies that without it, a patient could bring themselves within the definition of "terminally ill" by VSED.
