Even though states like Colorado have authorized medical aid in dying (MAID), individuals are still regularly prosecuted for felony assisted suicide. Helping another person end their life is criminally prohibited in every U.S. jurisdiction. MAID laws are a narrowly carved out exception. Helping someone ineligible for MAID or helping them without following MAID procedures is a crime.
This week, a Colorado court sentenced Mark Switzer to four years in prison for assisting the death of Nathan Thomas "Tom" Combs. The DA explained: “This was not a momentary lapse in [judgment] or a mistake. This was a calculated plan and a deliberate action. Regardless of whether the victim asked him to assist in his death, this defendant still killed Nathan Combs and this type of behavior won’t be tolerated in our community.”
