Montana Keeps Medical Aid in Dying

Other than Washington, DC, no state has come as close to repealing its medical aid in dying law as Montana. This year, S.B. 136 passed the Senate and nearly also passed the House too. But as in prior years, the bill was narrowly defeated.

The floor debate before the vote illustrates massive misunderstanding of both the bill and healthcare decision making. One representative says MAID is dangerous because many patients lack capacity. Of course, MAID is wholly irrelevant for such patients.

Especially odd are slippery slope arguments. Montana has had MAID for 15 years. That actual and positive track record in the very same state wholly rebuts slippery slope arguments.

  1. Futility would be the exact key word for all the DWD and MAID bills in this hemisphere. NO organized religion wants to fly in the face of #godifthereisone and acknowledge personal autonomy in life and death. No one has a right to define another person's suffering or quantify their quality of life in medical (includes mental health) decisions.
