But most of the eleven current MAID states are considering amending legislation this year (CA ME NJ OR WA VT). Even more notably, most of these states already amended their MAID statutes at least once. So, this is their third round of MAID legislation. Only Washington, DC has never amended (or attempted to amend) its original statute.
While pending legislation in Montana and Ohio would follow West Virginia in further restricting MAID, almost all MAID legislation has expanded access (and here). Compared to the original 1994 Oregon model, newer MAID laws: (1) permit not only physicians but also APRNs and PAs, (2) reduce or waive waiting periods, (3) eliminate residency requirements, and (4) increase transparency for those opting out.
We might call that second round of reform "MAID 2.0." But get ready for round three ("MAID 3.0"). These newer bills propose permitting intravenous administration, eliminating the six-month terminal illness requirement, and more.
