Women Who Shot Husband in Hospital Enters Plea

Ellen Gilland fatally shot her terminally ill husband in a Florida hospital room nearly two years ago. Earlier this week, the 78-year-old Florida woman entered a plea of no contest to charges of manslaughter with a firearm and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

In January 2023, Gilland's 77-year-old husband was being treated at an Advent-Health hospital in Daytona Beach. The two devised plan to end his life on their own terms. As he was reportedly too weak to take his own life, Gilland fired the shot herself.

Defendants in these sorts of cases generally get very light sentences. That may happen here too. The court ruled to allow testimony from a nurse who treated Gilland's husband about his significant medical complications, including multiple organ failures and expressed a desire to end his life.
