The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit has scheduled oral arguments in United Spinal Association v. California. Arguments are March 26, 2025 in Pasadena (assuming the Eaton fire is contained and the courthouse reopens).
United Spinal appeals a district court order dismissing its challenge that the California End of Life Option Act violates federal protections for persons with disabilities. The arguments will be livestreamed and archived here.
While the case targets only the CEOLOA, the arguments apply equally to MAID laws in other U.S. jurisdictions. If United Spinal wins on appeal, the case would not only continue in the district court (C.D. Cal.) but might spur copycat cases in other jurisdictions. If United Spinal loses, they would likely seek certiorari from the U.S. Supreme Court.
