While the annual MAID report from Canada garners much attention, Spain has also just released its annual MAID report. Spain's law came into force in June 2021.
NUMBER OF REQUESTS. There were 766 requests in 2023. That is 25% more than 2022 (when there were 576). These requests came disproportionately from the region near Barcelona.
NUMER OF PROVISIONS: 76% of MAID requests were accepted. But fewer than 50% were carried out. This is partially due to the long time lag between request and provision: 67 days on average. One quarter of applicants died before their application was resolved.
UNDERLYING ILLNESSES. Notably, cancer is the underlying illness for only 35% of applicants That is far lower rates in other jurisdictions. In contrast, neurological diseases are way higher.
ORGAN DONATION. As in Canada, most patients get clinician administered MAID. Nearly 13% of Spanish MAID patients participated in organ donation.
