A bill (H.B. 3615) just introduced in South Carolina would prohibit "staff and other agents of a healthcare facility operating in this State" from "initiating a discussion with a patient or the patient’s family regarding the execution of a do not resuscitate order for the patient."
While code status discussions are often conducted poorly, the answer seems not to ban them altogether. Because CPR for seriously ill inpatients is unlikely to restore them to baseline, many patients would prefer to avoid it.
Therefore, respect for patient goals, preferences, and values dictate discussing a DNR order. The doctrine of informed consent requires discussing all options a reasonable patient would deem significant.
