As I described in this JAMA article (and its accompanying chart), 2024 saw not only many MAID bills but also more innovative MAID bills.
As compared to MAID bills of yesterday, today's bills make MAID more accessible by: (1) expanding the types of clinicians who can offer it, (2) eliminating residency requirements, (3) dropping waiting periods, and (4) making conscience based refusals more transparent. Some are even expanding eligibility to dementia.
It looks like 2025 will be another busy year for MAID legislation. Delaware has already reintroduced the bill that passed both legislative chambers in 2024. New York is gearing up for round 10. Probably around 20 other states (even Indiana and Missouri) will introduce MAID legislation in 2025.
