Medical Futility Conflicts - Texas Advance Directives Act Still Targeted by Pro-Life

The Republican Party of Texas State Convention will take place in San Antonio from May 23-25, 2024.

Texas Right to Life has four Pro-Life resolutions for the convention. One is to repeal "the Anti-Life 25-Day Rule."

Last year, the legislature drastically amended the dispute resolution provisions in the Texas Advance Directives Act. It is now fairer and afford procedural due process. And these amendments were the result of extraordinary and broad stakeholder consensus.

But this is not enough for TRTL because the law still enables hospitals to unilaterally withhold or withdraw a patient’s basic life-sustaining treatment against the patient’s or family’s will without any appeal.

  1. There is no relationship between beginning and end of life, except we have no control over either. The use of the term personhood for beginning of life is so different than the term personhood in Alzheimer’s at the end of life To conflict the two issues is to not understand anything
