Texas Advance Directives Act - More Legislative Testimony on 10 Day Rule

As has been the custom for more than a decade, both House and Senate committees in the Texas Legislature have been holding long hours of hearings on amending dispute resolution provisions in the Texas Advance Directives Act. 

Most recently, the House Committee on Public Health heard H.B. 2609. The bill would eliminate the "10 day rule" often referenced as "the countdown." Sponsor Parker said this would restore the "balance of power."

Highlights include:

TADA has been used with conscious and objecting patients.

Scarcity of resources like ECMO sometimes drives TADA decisions.

TADA defenders are open to improvements in timing and committee composition, yet are opposed to eliminating a specific timeframe.
