New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham has signed into law the most accessible medical aid in dying statute in the United States.
The New Mexico legislation (H.B. 47) is notable because it moves beyond the statutes and guidelines in California, Colorado, District of Columbia, Hawaii, Maine, Montana, New Jersey, Oregon, Vermont, and Washington. It expands access by:
1. Allowing APRNs and PAs to prescribe
2. Reducing the 15-day waiting period to 48 hours
3. Requiring just one clinician to certify eligibility if the person is already enrolled in hospice care
A major step in the right direction.
