Patients Still Overestimate Success of CPR

Studies showing that public overestimates the success of CPR have been around for decades. One more was published this week in Emergency Medicine Journal.

Sacramento researchers asked 500 emergency department patients and their companions. Here is what they found:

• Over 50% estimated the success rate at over 75% in all situations.
• 90% said they wanted to receive CPR if it was possibly needed.
• Television was the main source of information of CPR for 95%.

When discussing code status providers should not assume individuals have reasonable expectations.
