Michigan May Require Consent to Stop Treatment after Death

Earlier this year, the University of Michigan withdrew organ-sustaining treatment from Bobby Reyes during a court conflict with his family over whether he was really dead on neurological criteria.

His mother is now pushing for a statute that will prohibit withdrawing support without parental consent. If enacted, this would make Michigan unique in the United States. No other jurisdiction has a statute or regulation requiring parental consent to withdraw life-sustaining treatment after the determination of death.
