Assistance With Eating and Drinking Only When Requested Can Prevent Living With Advanced Dementia
My latest article on advance VSED is in the November 2019 issue of JAMDA: The Journal of Post-Acute and Long-Term Care Medicine: "Assistance With Eating and Drinking Only When Requested Can Prevent Living With Advanced Dementia"
Thanks for the interesting post. I downloaded the article from our health sciences library and have a few questions. Do you have a specific dementia directive or template in mind for people to complete--such as Barack Gastner's Dementia Directive? Also, is it possible for the DPOA-HC to ask for eating/drinking to not be offered--even though a Dementia-Directive was not previously completed? This has actually occurred to a friend whose husband has advanced dementia. She no longer wanted feeding/fluids to be offered unless he was requesting these. The institution stated that she did not have that right to make the request for him even though she had a DPOA-HC, but not a dementia specific directive.
