The Farewell was released this summer. It depicts a grandmother who has been diagnosed with terminal cancer.
The grandmother's family gathers to say goodbye without letting her know that the end is near. Each family member weighs their guilt about lying against their understanding of the Chinese tradition that justifies it.
Perhaps there will be another film about the analogous U.S. tradition of oncologists not letting patients know that the end is near, instead guiding them toward aggressive treatment without disclosing the limited benefits of continued treatment.
