In 1980, the Uniform Determination of Death Act (UDDA) defined death as “irreversible cessation of circulatory and respiratory function or irreversible cessation of all functions of the entire brain, including the brainstem in accordance with accepted medical standards.” Interpreting and applying the UDDA definition and the clinical standards for death by neurological criteria are socially situated practices sometimes fraught with uncertainty and ambiguity.
