The HCEC Certification Commission™ announced another successful administration of the Healthcare Ethics Consultant-Certified (HEC-C) examination with 73 new HEC-Cs!
Similar to the previous administration, candidate demographics show that these HEC-Cs were well-qualified for the exam, with a median 803 hours of healthcare ethics consulting experience and the following academic credentials:
• 4 candidates hold baccalaureate degrees only.
• 19 candidates are masters prepared.
• 49 candidates hold doctoral degrees and over half of these are MDs or DOs.
Overall, the passing rate was 98.6% which is consistent with the results of the prior administration. A psychometrician contracted through Scranton Assessment Solutions has worked with the Commission not only to develop the examination, but also to set the passing score. Psychometrically, the high pass rate is explained through the characteristics of the examinees tested (e.g., educational qualifications, eligibility requirements, experience in the industry, etc.). Early examinees for the HEC-C exam are highly qualified and passed the exam at a high rate. Pass rates tend to stabilize as the number of diverse examinees increases over time. The cut score, or passing score, for the HEC-C exam was determined by following a standard setting procedure according to industry best practice. That score was determined by implementing a Modified Angoff Method, which takes into account pooled judgement of the cut score panel.
Candidates completed a survey post-exam and the top three reasons for taking the HEC-C exam were:
• to participate in and contribute to the professionalization of clinical ethics consultation
• to validate my experience
• to earn a credential that will help market my experience.
Also, 74% of the candidates indicated that the level of difficulty of the exam met their expectations and 26% found it more difficult than expected.
The next exam administration is in November 2019 and the application deadline is September 10 (or September 25 with a late fee).
