Status of Three Northern California Medical Futility Cases

Azalya Anderson
Azalya Anderson was shot in the head by a stray bullet. Her parents originally said that they would "fight" the brain death diagnosis made by clinicians at U.C. Davis Medical Center. But they ultimately agreed to remove organ support on Monday night  (09/17/18).

Kingston Holmes
Clinicians at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital gave the parents of Kingston Holmes a letter stating "his breathing machines will be turned off on Monday" (09/17/18) due to irreversible brain injury. Apparently, due to resistance and protests, the hospital delayed that plan to give the family more time to either get a second opinion and/or find a new facility.

Israel Stinson
The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit will shortly set oral argument in this case challenging the constitutionality of the California Uniform Determination of Death Act.
