Alive Inside - Widespread Misdiagnosis of Vegetative State

The Houston Chronicle recently ran an extraordinary story, more of a mini-book than a newspaper article, titled "Alive Inside." It is a compelling blend of detailed personal stories and medical science.

At bottom, the story is disturbing if not scary. Here are few highlights:

1. There may be 280,000 PVS patients in the United States.
2. 40% of those diagnosed as PVS are misdiagnosed.
3. The brain can heal and rewire itself. But many patients are not afforded the opportunity.
