Medical aid in dying has been authorized in Montana since 2009. But on Friday, the Montana Senate passed S.B. 136 which would recriminalize MAID. The bill now heads to the Montana House.
This legislation is notable because no jurisdiction in the world has ever repealed its own MAID law. The Australian federal government overruled a Northern Territory law in the 1990s. Exposing deep ignorance or medical mistrust, some Montana senators explained their vote: "a well placed bullet is more humane than risking something going wrong" with medications.
