Patient Blacklisted from ICU and Dies after Daughter Rejects Physician's Advances

Darrell Tom was a cancer patient admitted to Stanford Hospital for a bone marrow transplant. In a long-running (and still-unfolding) lawsuit, his family alleges that physician Gundeep Dhillon attempted to coerce Tom's daughter into sexual activity while Tom was unconscious. In retaliation for her rejection, Tom was blacklisted from the ICU.

Consequently, Tom died in the hospital without any attempt to save his life after he stopped breathing. Stanford won summary judgment on all the claims, arguing that ICU treatment would have been inappropriate given the extent and irreversibility of Tom's illness.

  1. A kidney transplant offers a new lease on life for patients with end-stage renal disease, dramatically improving their quality of life compared to long-term dialysis. The procedure, while complex, has become increasingly successful due to advancements in surgical techniques and immunosuppressive medications, which help prevent organ rejection. Moreover, living donor transplants present an additional option, often leading to better outcomes due to the elective nature of the surgery and shorter time to transplantation. The challenge, however, remains in finding enough compatible donors to meet the high demand for this life-saving procedure. 腎臓移植 日本
