Hospital Keeps Dead Body in ICU for over 20 Days

Clinicians at the University of Michigan C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital determined that Bobby Reyes was dead on September 24, 2019. Yet, due to court injunctions obtained by his family, the hospital has continued organ-sustaining treatment for the past 22 days. Today, the family goes back to court to seek an extension of the injunction.

Based on compelling evidence in similar cases (like Mirranda Lawson in Richmond), the impact on the staff and on other pediatric patients is likely significant.

  1. By declaring Bobby Reyes dead on 24 september, Clinicians at the University of Michigan C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital invalidate future health insurance coverage for post-acute care in long term care facilities. This is precisely why clinicians should not perform brain death examination before first obtaining SDM consent otherwise they will jeopardize and deny future medical care to that person.
