Nice series. Most people really have no idea what goes on inside an ICU. The most interesting thing to me, after 30 years of ICU practice, is that the high-tech image of an ICU is really a false picture; at root, it's quite low-tech. What we mostly do is support a patient while waiting for them to heal or not heal. The discussions we have with families about life and death are (or should be) also quite low-tech.
The ICU is family practice with lots of gadgets, the role of which are secondary. Don't let the gadgets obscure the fact that it's still family practice.
