Similar to the ongoing Baby Isaiah case in Edmonton, Alberta, a case in Lund, Sweden is now unfolding. The physicians for two-month-old Malin planned to turn off her respirator against her parents' wishes. The physicians had concluded that the life-sustaining treatment was useless because there was no activity in the infant's brain. But the parents, Anna MÃ¥nsson and Christian Fryding, explained: "We realize how badly injured she is, but we are at this stage not prepared to accept that they are stopping." "How can one know that a baby's brain can not develop?

While the hospital's medical director claims that the physicians can legally unilaterally refuse this treatment, the doctors have sought the views of specialists and had discussions with the Ethical Council of the Skane Region. They would like the discontinuation to be consensual. The parents are looking for contacts with specialists who are not linked to the children at the Intensive Care University Hospital. I appreciate you bringing attention to Malin's case. I'm sorry to inform you that in spite of tireless efforts from many, Malin passed away today when the doctors turned off her life support. The parents wanted to postpone as to be able to get a independent second opinion, but was refused. It's indeed very tragic. It may be of interest to you to know that there are no leagal ways in Sweden at all to interfere with a doctors decision. The courts have no jurisdisction, the district attorney neither, and the health care responsebility board can do nothing since it is only designed to look into issues after the fact. In all a doctor in Sweden is untouchable and practicly outside the reach of external control. This I find to be a frightening fact in itself, and not in line with what you would expect from a modern democracy with the rule of law.
Again thank you for bringin attention to little Malin, may she rest in peace. Below is a link to a supportpage for Malin on FB
